Today is Monday, December 16. Friday was so crazy we didn't have time to write! I did get the chance to have my picture taken with my new armadillo friends. I had a blast playing with them. Today was a lot of fun. The kids started making their gifts for their parents. I can't tell you exactly what they are making because some parents might read this, but I can tell you it is soooooo cute. They also started making a stocking. This time of the year is so much fun. I'm sad that I have to leave today but it's time for me to go home for the holidays. I've had a great trip, so far. I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday. Enjoy your vacation!
Good luck in 2003!
Love,
Selena

Rain, rain, go away!!!! Talk about a rainy Thursday. Oh, my goodness. I'm glad I stayed inside. I went to art today. What fun! The kids got to make a clay footprint ornament. I also went to the computer lab. I learned all about the seasons. I really like summer the best. Winter is just too cold! I had another surprise yesterday. After school, I went to the old Katy railroad car that is in the city park. Trains have been going through Katy for a long time. They say Katy might have gotten its name from the MKT railroad way back in 1897 when the post office was offically opened. MKT stands for Missouri, Kansas and Texas because the train went through those states. That sounds good to me! Our bus friends are here. It's time to go home! See you tomorrow.

Happy Hump Day! It is Wednesday and the sun is shining!! Today I got to visit the library. The kids checked out books to take home. I really liked The Great Bug Hunt. I got a big surprise yesteray after school. Mrs. Miller and 2 of her students took me to the BIG Katy Mills Mall and I got my picture taken with Santa and my friends. We had a great time. I told Santa that I want a new backpack for Christmas. I hope he brings me one! He sure was nice. Time to go home. I have to run. Talk to you tomorrow.

Happy Tuesday! Guess what? It didn't rain today. YIPPEE!!! It was still cold but at least the kids got to go outside for recess. They had a great time. I learned all about the letter K. Just like in KATY! The big word for the week is 'for'. I like learning how to read. Speaking of reading, Mrs. Miller has a bath tub in her classroom. The kids like to read in it. Luckily, it doesn't have any water in it, just pillows and a BIG bear. Several of the kids showed me how to read in the tub. It was so much fun! Some of the kids surprised me and brought in some of their armadillos for me to play with. I thought that was so nice. One looks just like me but is a lot smaller and his hat is blue. I sure am looking forward to more friends coming tomorrow. See you tomorrow!

Hello from Katy Elementary! Boy, I sure had fun here in kindergarten. Today I went to music and PE. In music, I sang Christmas carols. The boys and girls sure do sing pretty! Everyone was worried that I would get hurt playing Bugs so I sat on the stage steps and watched. Wow! Those kids did a lot of running. I was tired just watching them! We didn't get to go to recess because it was raining hard! It was also COLD! The kids are keeping their fingers crossed that it will be sunny and warmer tomorrow. Me, too!! It's almost time to go and we have a second grader that came to read us a book. I can hardly wait to hear "Merry Christmas Mom and Dad". See you tomorrow!

Hi, everyone! I finally arrived in Katy, Texas on Friday, December 6. I didn't get to meet the kids because they had already gone home by the time I got there. Mrs. Miller took me home with her for the weekend. I got to help decorate her house for Christmas. Those strings of lights can be pretty tricky to untangle! It's cold outside so we got to drink hot chocolate. YUM! I'm going to bed early tonight because I get to meet all the kindergarteners in the morning and I know they will be taking me everywhere. I'll let you know all about it.
Sleep tight, everybody!

Today, I went to Spanish and the teacher read a story in Spanish called "Marti and the Mango". In recess, I helped a boy trade Yu-Gi-Oh cards. In class, we worked on finding the nearest 10 in math and in the morning Mrs. Gay finished reading "Shiloh" to us and we had to write a reflection. That Shiloh was a pretty lucky dog to have a friend like Marty. It was a fun day. I will talk to you tomorrow before I get on my way to my next school.

Now it is time to go home and I am ready for a rest.

I am so sorry I didn't get to write to you yesterday. It was such a busy day in Mrs. Gay's class. We built turkeys in the morning with paper and crayons. Wow, that was fun. Then for lunch all the moms and dads came to eat with us. We had turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, and sweet potato pie. Yummy, what a great feast. Of course, that made everyone's lunch late and the rest of the day was just a mix up. But, it was a great lunch. It was such an exciting day. I wonder what we will do on Wednesday? I miss you all very much. I hope your week is going well.

This is when all the second graders get to go to another teacher's class. It was neat to meet new friends. Mrs. Gay's Frog group played math games to practice number skills to 100 and problem solving. At rotation time we went to PE and Spanish. It was fun to speak some Spanish. I will talk to you tomorrow. I heard Mrs. Gay talking about some kind of turkey day or something. I wonder what that means?

They have been learning all about me so that I would feel welcome. They were dressed pretty funny when I arrived. They were celebrating Children's Book Week by dressing up as storybook characters. I saw Junie B. Jones, Pippi Longstockings, Harry Potter, and oh my goodness so many dalmations, I thought I was in the movie. It seems that all of kindergarten were dressed like dalmations. Thank goodness they were not yapping. Mrs. Gay's class got right to work learning about the heart and lungs. Now we are off to PE to use our heart and lungs. It will feel good to get some exercise after traveling from Fort Worth. It was about a 3 hour drive.

Hi. Today was the last day at Lott. I knew Mrs. Ritter was coming today. All the children and I watched the door every time someone knocked hoping it was her. I have to admit I really have missed her, and although I love my time here, I am getting a little homesick. Finally around 1:00, she came. The kids were so excited to meet her (after all, I had been talking about her for 3 whole weeks!). They were amazed the she and Miss Moher have been friends since 4th grade! I got to say my good-byes to all my friends here. They were really sad to see me go and I got lots of hugs. I promised I would try to come back again. I learned lots of good things while I was here. I will miss all my friends, but am looking forward to heading to my next school. Good-bye for now.

Today, I had the chance to go spend the morning with Kindergarten. Oh, boy, did I have fun. I remembered to be on my best behavior. Today we worked on language activities and reading our readers using the letter "a". We played in centers (I liked the homemaking center the best). Later, Miss Moher asked me to come back so I could take some pictures. We took some yesterday afternoon around Lott and today finished out the roll of film with students in her class. I had so much fun. I will be sorry to leave tomorrow, but hope that I can come back to visit again someday.

The sun was back, but the playground was still muddy. We got to play out on the parking lot today. Some students got to go to the park up the road, but it was too far for me. We talked about the elections today in class, and wrote in journals who from Lott would make a good president. That was the easy part. Telling why they would be a good president took some thinking! We really had to use our minds. I think my mama armadillo would be a good president, but I am not sure people would think so. Miss Moher said we would go around town today after school (if the rain is not back). It has been too wet to do that yet. I think that will be fun.

Sunshine! After 2 full weeks of rain, we finally got sun. The kids and I were so excited, but it was still too muddy to play outside. We had to play inside. The junior high and senior high art students came today to teach us art. I got to go next door with second graders. We made Santa ornaments and stars. Is Christmas coming already?? Yup, only 50 days away. This afternoon, I helped Miss Moher's tutoring kids. 3 third-graders were having trouble with word problems so I told them some stories and they figured out the problems, whether to add or subtract. We sure did have fun. The first-graders were doing spelling and needed no help at all. Hope it is sunny enough tomorrow to play outside!

It is another wet, rainy day here in Lott. It has rained almost every day for 2 full weeks. I can tell that the kids just want to get outside, but unless they want to be like my friend, the pig, and roll in lots of mud, that is probably not too good of an idea. I have been a good armadillo for several days, but now I am getting the itch to go adventuring again. I talked to Miss Moher about it. She said some of the high school students were coming to teach about art tomorrow, and that maybe I could go back and visit my 2nd grade friends. I also might get to sneak across the hall and take a look at the Kindergarten classes. They always sound like they are having so much fun! I had a fun day reading accelerated readers and playing computer with the students that had finished their work. The students who were not done had to finish some missing assignments. That is why it is always a good idea to do the work when you are supposed to.

My, my. I feel much better after my nap. Today is Friday. The school is having a BIG football game tonight with another team. Lots of the kids are talking about it. They have streamers, pom-poms, tatoos, and lights to support the Rosebud-Lott Cougars. The Cougars have not lost a game. However, neither has the other team. It should be an exciting game. However, I think it will be too wet for me to go, so I will stay here and stay dry!
Today lots of the kids talked about all the excitement of last night and Halloween. Many of them talked about the haunted house they visited. Others went trick or treating. Some stayed home and passed out candy. They wrote about it all in their journals today. I was so excited to hear about all their adventures. I have only one more week here at Lott. Mrs. Ritter will be here next Friday to come take me home. I will be sorry to leave, but will remember all my friends. However, that is a week away, and who knows what will happen next week!

Hi! Today was Halloween. Today along with the regular boys and girls at school, I met skeletons, princesses, and cougars (Lott's mascot). It was quite exciting! They were all very well behaved and seemed to be learning just like I have been! One of the mothers brought cupcakes and a special cup. She told Miss Moher that it wouldn't bite. Inside was a little armadillo magnet that looked just like me. The kids put us up next to each other. It was an exciting day, but I sure am tired from all the candies and cookies I ate! I am ready to sleep. Aaaaahh. I am heading for a quiet spot to take a nap. More later.

Hey, I sure did have fun today with the second graders. They are such wonderful new friends. They have lots of cool stuff in their room including a big Math bulletin board. Everyday they do this thing called "Math Meeting". They count up and down, odds and evens, do calendar and patterns. When they called on me, I knew how to count to 100 by 5's! I was so proud of myself. Also today, a fireman came with his fire truck to talk about fire safety. I learned many important things!

Boy, was I in trouble! I found out today why children have some of the rules they have. Around 11 o'clock, I snuck out with one of the 6th graders when he headed off to Mrs. Lindsey's class. Wow! Mrs. Lindsey's class had real plants so I decided to help myself to a couple of leaves. Then I spotted some snacks behind Mrs. Lindsey's desk. She had Snickers bars! So I helped myself to some of those, too. (Mrs. Lindsey was busy and I didn't want to bother her.) Then Miss Moher and the students realized I was missing. They read my journal from Thursday and then went looking for me. They were very relieved to find me with Mrs. Lindsey. They told me NEVER to go anywhere without letting a teacher know. Mrs. Lindsey told me I should never take anything without permission. I guess I should have asked for the plant leaf and the snickers. I now know it is important to follow these rules. I promised to be very good and they let me stay the rest of the afternoon with Mrs. Lindsey. She has many students that are always going back and forth different places. I have noticed some of her kids coming to Miss Moher's class in the morning, and some of Miss Moher's kids going to her room in the afternoon. They worked on some fractions, and some Reading where they had to find the answers. At 3:00, Miss Moher came to get me and take me back to her room. I promised I would be a good armadillo and not go anywhere without telling her. She said if I was good, maybe I could go see the 2nd grade next door for a little while tomorrow.
Hurrah!

Yet another group was talking about Northern and Southern hemispheres of the world. I don't remember learning these things when I was in armadillo school. Hello! I finally made it from Kansas back to Texas. I am now visiting Miss Moher's class at Lott Elementary. Lott is a little town about 30 miles south of Waco, TX. Less than 800 people live in this whole town. They were kind enough to let me rest after my long trip so I have to tell you about the past 2 days. When I arrived the children were so happy to see me. They all wanted to give me a hug. There are lots of kids in this class, all ages and grades. They are working on so many things! One group was working on Reading words with ng and nk at the end. Another group was working on trading for tens during a Math lesson. A different group was working on continents of the world. They said I came from North America! Today the students drew pictures of me in their journals and told why they liked me. I was so pleased to have them write about me. It is so nice to have new friends. That's all for now.

Mrs. Frazier is back! She was so happy to see me. I hadn't seen her since we were in San Antonio at the NECC Conference. We first met in Atlanta at the NECC Conference 2 years ago. I have had a great time working with the fifth graders on the scrapbook they made for us. They put lots of information about the great state of Kansas. Did you know that the Wizard of Oz takes place in Kansas? I was thankful there were no tornadoes while I was here. My last big day at North Elementary was Dear Mr. Henshaw Day. The three fifth grade teachers at North Elementary planned activities all day long. My favorite was trying to hook up a burglar alarm to a lunch box. We hooked up a battery to a light bulb and actually made it light up. I also liked figuring mileage with a calculator. We had to locate big cities on a map then calculate the distance. I had to have some help with it. Every time I turned around someone was taking my picture! I can tell these kids haven't seen very many armadillos. At the end of the day, we decorated cookies. They were the best cookies I've ever had. I put a lot of icing on mine and some chocolate chips. We got to eat them before we all went home. Mrs. Frazier's fifth grade class is right beside one of the kindergarten classes. I keep sneaking over there when no one is looking. They have bright colored carpet on their floor and lots of bright colors in their room. I'm really going to miss these guys, but I'm looking forward to returning to Texas.

I think I've put on a few pounds. I love music class with the fifth graders. Sometimes they sing so beautifully I get cold chills. Today is the last day the kids have a substitute teacher. I got to listen through the headphones to taped messages about each booth at the museum. That was really cool. We got to go to the high school for PE today. I was looking forward to this day. Everyone said today we would be visiting a large farm. I got all excited thinking about being in the great outdoors again, even if it was a little bit chilly. However, when it came time to leave, they almost forgot me. Thanks to Ross, I didn't get left behind. On the way to the farm we sang "John Jacob Jingle Heimerschmidt." When we got there we saw three big green combines. Jim, the man on the combine, stopped so Mr. Raymer could take a picture of me and the kids. Then we went out into the sunflower field. I could have spent a lot of time exploring there but we had other things to do. We got back in the school suburban and headed back to school. Mrs. Elias, the librarian, took me to the kindergarten classes. I felt like I was home again. They all loved me! Everyone wanted to hug and squeeze me and that's just what I wanted to do to them too.

You'll never believe this guys! In Goodland there is a giant, a mean giant, painting. It is called the Van Gogh Sunflower. A Canadian came to Goodland about 2 years ago and painted it. Then some engineers designed an easel to put it on. I wanted to climb the easel but once again the principal said, "No!" We could only look at it from down below. It is awesome. Next we went to the Arts Center. We saw several sculptures at the Art Center designed by a man that used to live here. Next we went to the Court House and I had my picture taken in front of a statue by the same artist. Back at school we had a great lunch. Well, the teachers really like it and say that it is their favorite. I noticed the kids didn't eat it too well. It was bierochs. It is a German food. It looks like bread with hamburger, cheese, and cabbage inside. I ate all of mine. I really like this class. They seem to have a lot of fun at school. Did I mention their regular teacher is out of town this week? They have a substitute. I wonder if things will be different when their teacher gets back.
I had a really fun day!

I'm in windy Kansas! You can tell that Kansas hasn't had much rain this year. It is very dry and the corn doesn't look very good. I think I'd be spotted pretty quickly in one of these corn fields. Can you believe the kids here have never seen an armadillo? They went to our website to learn more about me! The fifth graders and the kindergartners worked together on an art project. They made armadillos! They're pretty cute but they don't look much like me! The principal, Mr. Raymer, wanted to take me for a ride so away we went. I wasn't sure I really wanted to go since I had just arrived. We went to a place called the Kidder Massacre. It was about 10 miles north of Goodland. They told me that the Native Americans surrounded Lt. Kidder and his men and then killed them. The Native Americans were not happy with the white man taking over their lands. A lot of the land we saw today looked much like it did a hundred years ago. When I get back I'll show you the notebook the fifth grade students made for you. It describes the massacre site. We had fun traveling to the Kidder Massacre.
We played a word game with my group. On the way back I saw a lot of prairie dogs. I wanted to get out and play with them but the principal would not allow that. We made up songs on the way back. We played games with the ABC's, naming names, cities, places, animals, and states. I came up with most of the names! Everybody wanted to hold me all the time.
I really think I'm going to like it here!

I arrived at St. John in Brandenburg, Kentucky on Friday just as the kids were lining up to get on the buses! Boy, were they surprised to see me! After spending the weekend with Mrs. Barr, and her three kids, two dogs, 4 hermit crabs, and 3 cats, I was glad to return to school and be with the kids today! We had a great time! We counted apples (I got to ride along in the apple basket!), fingerpainted (I stayed on Mrs. Barr's chair!), then I had a wonderful time at Diana's Park. You should have seen me climbing the rock wall and going across the monkey bars! The weather was nice and warm. I felt like I was at home! Mrs. Barr said she might take me to see the Ohio River! I am so excited!
I'll write back tomorrow!

Today was exciting because we experimented with colors. We got to mix two different colors and see what color they made. We all would guess first. Unfortunately, all my guesses were wrong. I really learned a lot today! Did you know that red and blue make purple? and red and yellow make orange? and blue and yellow make green?
Well, I had a great week in Miss. Longhi's Kindergarten class and I hope to visit again so that I can continue to learn more Spanish.
I'm off to Kentucky! Write you again soon!

I really liked today because we got to go outside and play a fun game called "Fox and Bear". I realized how out of shape I am. It has been a while since I've traveled and now I need to get back in shape because I will be visiting many schools. I will sleep good tonight.

Today we got to make a class book about our favorite color. It seems like most of the boys like the color blue while the girls really like the color red and pink. I like all the colors so it was hard for me to decide which one to choose. In math we used teddy bears. We made patterns using the teddy bears. In English, we studied the color yellow. We sang a song about the color yellow and we found objects in the class that are yellow. We also got to color the yellow page in our color books. Write you again soon!

Today we continued talking about colors. We acted out the story we read on Monday and we worked in centers. In math, we each got to make a special design using our geometric figures and we shared it with the class. I helped make a dinosaur. In English, we talked about the color blue. We sang a song about the color and we found objects in the room that are blue. We also colored the blue page in our color books. Write you again soon!

Hello! Today is my first day at George C. Clarke Elementary. I met Miss. Longhi's Kindergarten class. There are 22 students in the class and they all speak Spanish as their first language. We read a book in Spanish "Gato y sus colores" and we learned the color words in Spanish. I worked in centers with the children and we got to cut and paste, color, and listen to stories on cassettes. In math we learned about geometric figures. They were fun! We made many different designs. The last part of the day we spoke in English. Today we learned the color red and we found things in the room that are red. One student put the word red on my bandana! Write you again soon!
